What this desk publishes

Cabinet & Counter is an independent editorial publication about the kitchen as a working room. It covers four shelves: Kitchen Planning, Cabinetry, Counters and Surfaces, and Appliances and Fittings. Each entry begins from one reader question and stays inside it, from how far a worktop should overhang a seating run to how a bank of drawers is priced by a supplier.

Who it is written for

Homeowners planning a renovation, renters with permission to alter a kitchen, and small builders, joiners and fitters who want a plain-language reference they can share with a client. The writing assumes a reader who is drawing a real room rather than browsing a showroom, and who needs to decide something this week: where a joint falls, how wide a walkway becomes, which finish survives a scrubbed counter.

The useful angle

Cabinet & Counter translates. Trade conventions, manufacturer terminology and published performance criteria are restated as planning decisions, with the trade-offs named rather than hidden. A reader comes away knowing what a choice costs in millimetres, in maintenance and in money, and which of the three moves first.

How an entry is written

One question, one answer stated early, then the sections a reader can jump to, then the sources the desk read. Entries are dated, and an entry is revised when the underlying source or standard changes, with the revision described in the body rather than hidden.

Photographs on this site are illustrative plates, composed to show a principle such as clearance, overhang or drawer alignment. They show how a detail works rather than documenting one specific installation, and each plate is captioned as a plate.
